Were still in the first month of the season for Cal Poly Humboldt basketball and already the mens team have reached half of their win total from a season ago after the Jacks 87-70 over Western Oregon on Tuesday night.

Humboldt is now 3-1 on the year, averaging 83.5 points per game, a massive improvement from their 67.3 average from last season.

The Jacks defense also improved thus far, allowing 73.9 points per game last season, with that total down to 69.3 through four games this year.

It took nine games a season ago for Humboldt to win their third game, doing so in less than half the time this year.

Tuesday night was more of the same for the new-look Jacks team, with freshman guard Aidan Fowler getting in touch with his new home, scoring 24 points and hitting five threes to add onto the Humboldt storm.

Junior guard Kalib LaCount and senior guard Jamal Briscoe each finished with 14 points in the win.

Fowler, LaCount and Briscoe are new additions to Humboldt for this season with the only player from last years Humboldt team seeing action on Tuesday, Rob Diaz III having 10 points with five assists and three steals.

In the first half, it appeared as if the Jacks would threaten to crack the century mark, taking a 49-33 lead into halftime but Western Oregon battled back in the final 20 minutes.

Western Oregon cut the deficit to 75-69 with just over three minutes to play but the Jacks closed the game with a 12-1 run to secure the win.

It was a good shooting night for Humboldt, with a field goal percentage of 52.5% and hitting on 45% of their three-point attempts.

The Jacks shot only 63.6% from the free throw line but go to the charity stripe a season-high 22 times.

Senior forward Kyle Frelow got his second double-double of the season, getting 11 points and 12 rebounds with two steals and a block.

Frelow has averaged 2.5 steals per game so far this season with Humboldt as a team averaging 13.25 a game, with the Jacks opponents averaging just 6.75 steals per game.

Now the Jacks will have over a week to prep for the start of CCAA conference play, with Chico State coming to town on Nov.

30.

The Jacks womens team lost on the road 80-52 to No.

11 Azusa Pacific Tuesday night, knocking Humboldt to 1-3 to start the year.

Humboldt got their first win of the year in overtime on Saturday, holding off Concordia University Irvine 81-75, with junior guard Dylan Lovett scoring six of her 14 points in the overtime.

Its a bit of a repeat for the Jacks, who got their first win of the season last year over Concordia University Irvine before falling to Azusa Pacific before ending up with a 12-14 record on the season with a ninth-place finish in the CCAA.

Things didnt go quite as well on Tuesday, trailing 35-25 at the half before Azusa blew things open in the third quarter, outscoring the Jacks 30-16 in the period.

Sophomore guard Kendall Pickford was the only Jacks player in the double-figure scoring in the loss with 15 points, Pickford hit five of her 12 three-point attempts, not attempting a single shot inside the three-point line.

Lovett was second on the team with seven points.

As a team, Humboldt shot 31.5% from the field, went 7-27 from three and 11-21 from the free throw line.

So far this season, the Jacks are shooting 60% from the free throw line, 39.6% from the field and 29.5% from three.

Humboldt turned the ball over 25 times in Tuesdays loss to continue a troubling trend for the Jacks, with Humboldt having had at least 20 turnovers in each game so far this season.

The Jacks will have their home opener on Saturday against Northwest Nazarene at 5:30 p.m.

before beginning conference play against Chico State at home the following Saturday.
